Premier Interschools Match Report: Paul Roos vs Grey College

Sponsorships - 19 August 2019

Premier InterschoolsMarcell Muller scored a brace of tries in Grey College’s dominant 51-28 win over Paul Roos in their annual Premier Interschools derby in Stellenbosch on Saturday.

Grey scored nine tries, which included a magnificent 90-metre effort from fullback Franco Knoetze, to finish off their glorious 2019 campaign on a high. They ended the year unbeaten and also recorded their fourth consecutive win over their bitter rivals from the Cape Winelands.

The first half was a thrill a minute. Muller opened the scoring for Grey in the fifth minute of the match, but Grey lost loosehead prop Tielman Nieuwoudt to a yellow card for a no-arms tackle shortly afterwards.

Paul Roos hit back with tries from inside centre Ruben Labuschagne and No 8 Andre Smit, but Grey scored their second try soon afterwards when wing JD Odendall showed his speed and power to score a wonderful try on the right flank.

Grey regained the lead after flank Deon le Roux went over in the corner, but the lead changed hands again shortly before the break when Paul Roos’ replacement lock Jordan Venter broke clean through from a lineout to score under the posts.

However, Grey would take a 22-21 lead into the break when Knoetze scored one of the tries of the season. Nieuwoudt made amends for his yellow card with an unbelievable try-saving tackle, before Knoetze scooped the ball up and sprinted from his own tryline to score a sensational individual try.

Muller extended Grey’s lead early in the second half with his second try of the mtch. Nieuwoudt then again showed his pace for a big man when he sprinted through before finding Duan Ludik, who scored Grey’s sixth try of the match.

Ian Small-Smith capitalised from an interception by big lock Danwich Beukes to put Grey 37-21 up with 15 minutes left to play in the match.

Paul Roos hit back in the 63rd minute of the match after Kade Wolhuter lovely floated pass found fullback Cade Croy.

However, Grey would not be denied, as flyhalf FC du Plessis and replacement scrumhalf Tiaan Fourie brought up the half-century with the Bloemfontein school’s eighth and ninth try of the match.
