Break out the battery cleaning solution and get to work on any corrosion you find on your battery tray or hold down clamp.
To get started you’ll be making your very own battery cleaning solution. Luckily for you it’s as easy as mixing two ingredients together.
Ingredients:
- 6 T baking soda
- 4 C warm tap water
Step 1
Turn your car off and disconnect the battery by removing the negative clamp first marked with the minus symbol. Then remove the positive clamp.
Step 2
Mix 4 cups of water with 6 tablespoons of baking soda. While we used more water in our video, this recipe should form a paste which will be easier to work with the first time.
Step 3
Rub the paste onto the corroded area using an old toothbrush or rag. If you see foaming or bubbling that means the solution is working.
Step 4
Scrape off any deposits and then rinse off the solution using a little water, taking care not to get any water in the vents.
Step 5
Wipe away any leftover solution using a damp rag and apply some Vaseline or petroleum jelly. This will help prevent future corrosion.
Step 6
Reconnect the battery, starting with the positive clamp and then the negative.
Remember that you should always take extra care when working with your battery. Wear gloves at all times and replace your battery entirely if you notice any cracking in the case.
