Many South African pensioners are dependent on the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) old-age grant. But for most, if not all, this is just not enough. Which is why some retailers and establishments have made it their business to help older citizens by offering them discounts on products or services.

We’ve put together a comprehensive breakdown of retail categories and the various offerings from well-loved brands across South Africa. But there can be some confusion as to what exactly is a pensioner, and how do you qualify as one?

What is a pensioner?

Not everyone who is at ‘pensioner age’, presumably 60 or 65,  is a pensioner. In fact, a pensioner is someone who receives an 'old age pension' or what is now called an Older Persons Grant.

To qualify as a pensioner, you must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee, and live in South Africa. You also must not:

• Receive any other social grant for yourself
• Be cared for in a state institution
• Earn more than R86,280 per annum if you are single or R172,560 if married.
• Have assets worth more than R1,227,600 if you are single or R2,455,200 if you are married.

To apply for a SASSA card, visit the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) office nearest to where you live along with your 13-digit bar-coded identity document.

What if I don’t have a SASSA card?

Not every pensioner special requires you to be on an Older Persons Grant. There are many retailers and institutions that simply need your ID to prove you are at the required age to qualify for their special offer. Each will have different requirements so be sure to check beforehand..

• Makro – Up to 10% discount on general in-store purchases and up to 5% off ins-store food purchases to mSenior members. The discount is intended only for purchases made for personal use. Bulk purchases for commercial or business use do not qualify.

• Builders’ Warehouse – 10% discount on certain purchases (some products are exempt)
  • When: Every Wednesday

• Clicks Seniors Club –60+ ClubCard members earn 4% cash back on online or in-store purchases.
