Premier Interschools Match Report: Bishops vs Rondebosch Boys High

Sponsorships - 10 June 2019

Bishops Vs Rondebosch Boys HighRight wing Luca Liebenberg scored a hat trick in Bishops’ 36-19 victory over rivals Rondebosch in a Premier Interschools match at the Piley Rees field in Cape Town on Saturday.

Liebenberg scored two of his tries in a tightly contested first half, as Bishops went into the break 21-19 ahead. He then completed his hat trick early in the second half, to cap off a wonderful individual display.

Rondebosch actually dominated the opening exchanges but faded badly in the second stanza.

Rondebosch left wing – and headboy – Lehan Botha scored a magnificent brace inside 12 minutes to rock Bishops and give his side an early 12-0 lead. The second try was the pick of the two, after Botha ran a top line from a scrum to go over under the posts.

Bishops hit back in the 18th minute when big lock Sam Rudston powered his way over the line following a lovely break by their scrumhalf Liam Kloosman.

Bishops started to make a lot of metres with their ball-in-hand approach, and it wasn’t long before Liebenberg scored the first of his three tries in the right corner. Fullback Matthew Lennett converted from the touchline to give Bishops a 14-12 lead.

Rondebosch were back in front five minutes before the break when lanky flyhalf Kian Davis sliced through the Bishops defence. However, Bishops hit back almost immediately when Liebenberg scored his second try to give the hosts a slender two-point lead at the break.

Liebenberg completed his hat trick six minutes into the first half after some great work by inside Michael Ford, who ripped the ball away from his opposite number Jordan Collier. Liebenberg then found himself on the end of a couple of stunning offloads before scoring in the right corner.

Just over 10 minutes later, Rondebosch’s hopes of a comeback were dented when replacement hooker Jason Johnson was yellow carded for a late tackle on Kloosman.

The hard-working Rudson scored his second try for Bishops in the 51st minute, before hooker Keagan Blanckenberg drove over the tryline to give the home side a 36-19 lead.

Rondebosch outside centre Dalvon Blood scored a magnificent breakaway try five minutes from the end of the match, but it ended up just being a consolation score.
