Premier Interschools Match Report: Paarl Boys' High vs Paul Roos

Sponsorships - 27 May 2019

Premier InterschoolPaarl Boys’ High produced a mix of power, speed and intelligence to beat Paul Roos 29-16 in a Premier Interschools match at the Brug Street Stadium in Paarl on Saturday.

Paarl Boys, who were hammered 44-8 by Paul Roos in the corresponding fixture in Stellenbosch last year, managed to get their revenge in front of their spirited home supporters. It was a welcome return to form for the Paarl school after their 43-24 defeat at the hands of the red-hot Grey College two weeks ago.

It was Paul Roos’ second successive defeat at the hands of Paarl opposition following their 42-15 drubbing by Paarl Gimnasium at home in Stellenbosch in their previous Premier Interschools fixture.

Boishaai’s pack put in a much-improved performance after they were put to the sword in Bloemfontein. Their set piece play was good and their maul defence even better. Fyhalf Kian Meadon also had an excellent afternoon with the boot and in general play.

The home side led 16-9 at the break. Boishaai centre Quan Horn scored the only try of the half with a powerful run, while Meadon managed to slot a conversion and thee penalties from the kicking tee. His third penalty four minutes before halftime was successfully nailed from two metres inside his own half.

Paul Roos flyhalf Kade Wolhuter, who have signed a three-year deal with French club Montpellier, converted three penalties for the visitors in the first stanza. He also impressed with his running ability and his distribution, which helped the visitors to gain some parity in the possession stakes in the second half.

However, it was the home side that drew first blood in the second half. Meadon managed to break the Paul Roos defensive line before grubbing the ball ahead. No 8 Gideon van Wyk managed to out sprint his opponents and scored the try to stretch the Paarl side’s lead to 21-9.

Paul Roos managed to get some momentum halfway through the second half and tested the Boishaai defence, who did well to propel many of the home side’s lineout drives. The Stellenbosch team, however, would eventually get over the line in the 60th minute when centre Luke Burger scored next to the left upright. Wolhuter added the conversion.

But, for all their effort, that would be Paul Roos’ only points of second half.

Paarl Boys fullback Jacques Rosseau kicked a penalty for the home side in the 65th minute, before wing Angelo Osch scored a magnificent individual try, showcasing his searing pace and stepping, to wrap up a very good win for the home side.
