Premier Interschools Rugby: Grey College vs. Paarl Boys High

Sponsorships - 09 May 2019

Supa Quick Premier InterschoolsOn Saturday, 11 May, Premier Interschools will present their 3rd edition of the 2019 season and arguably one of the biggest derbies of the year. While Paarl Boys’ have been flying under the radar the last year after going three seasons unbeaten, the rugby factory from Bloemfontein has again claimed the top spot in SA Schoolboy rugby. They have swept away all opposition with ease so far with their latest conquest being another Paarl team in Paarl Gimnasium, which they dispatched by 47-33 at the Wildeklawer tournament.

They once again possess a backline of sublime speed and skill with a pack of forwards who can dominate their opponents in all aspects. There is pedigree in their team with some offspring and siblings of well-known rugby players like Andre-Hugo Venter, son of legendary Springbok flanker Andre Venter, Ian Small-Smith, brother of William Small-Smith and Danwich Beukes, son of Freestate stalwart of many a year, Joe Beukes.

It is however not the individuals that makes this team so dangerous, but their ability to perform as a well-oiled unit. On attack or defence, there always seems to be and extra man to close the gap or put another into space, the result of a team that plays well together and knows their game plan.

Paarl Boys’ High is slowly returning to form and are looking better with each game they play. With the side settling into a winning rhythm, they are perhaps best suited to give the juggernauts from Bloemfontein a run for their money. With a solid pack of forwards, a pivot with a learned boot, great midfield defence and some real speed in the back three, they can put Grey under pressure in areas they have not been tested before.

Grey College BloemRugby at Grey College

Grey has served Bloemfontein, the Free State, South Africa and the world well over the past 150 years. Grey has been able to adjust and remain relevant in a changing environment in which it has developed, grown and excelled. The brand is known and revered throughout South Africa and even internationally and the products of the school make a positive difference wherever they are. Parallel medium education, tolerance, respect for others and loyalty to the school are not only traditions, but firm foundations in a global village. Grey is structured on these foundations and it is constantly adapting to new developments. The wave of change washing over our country confirms the value of Grey’s traditions.

Grey has produced 46 Springbok rugby players. Since WW II it has produced more Springbok players than any other school in SA, their latest being centre Francois Venter.

Paarl BoysRugby at Paarl Boys’ High School

Rugby is an integral part of the Paarl Boys’ way of life. It is important to win, but that should not be the primary objective. A sportsman may never be abused to ensure the success of a team. The primary objective at Paarl Boys’ High must be one of enjoyment, for both player and coach. Whereas they agree with the legendary Vince Lombardi when he said: ‘’Winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing’’ they hold winning to be more than just points on the board. Winning relates to the values, commitment and the pursuit of the best of one’s abilities.

PBHS has produced 21 players that have represented South Africa since 1906. They have provided some of the legends and most famous Springbok rugby players ever to have played in the Green and Gold. Players like Oom “Boy” and Fanie Louw, Piet “Spiere” du Toit, Mannetjies Roux, Ryk van Schoor, Carel Du Plessis, and Corné Krige.

Paarl Boys’ provided eight SA Schools players in 2016 which is a new record for any school in one year. They also provided five SA u/20 players for the 2017 Junior World Cup squad to be played in Georgia later this year and currently also have five players in the 2019 u/20 world cup team.

About Premier Interschools

Premier Interschools is a series of 12 matches, which feature the highest profile and most traditional interschool rugby rivalries from South Africa’s top rugby schools, which are broadcast live on SuperSport from April to August.

Schoolboy rugby has served as one of the cornerstones of domestic rugby dating back more than a century, and true to its slogan “Honouring Heritage. Playing for the Future”, Premier Interschools is about history, heritage and tradition. The series, now in its seventh year, is expected to grow even stronger.

The Premier Interschools stories are further captured in 12 Preview Magazine Shows, which preview all the games and provide historical overviews of these traditional schools and highlight other academic, cultural and sporting achievements.
